Virtual Machines and Containers as a Platform for Experimentation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Research on computational speech processing has traditionally relied on the availability of a relatively large and complex infrastructure, which encompasses data (text and audio), tools (feature extraction, model training, scoring, possibly on-line and off-line, etc.), glue code, and computing. Traditionally, it has been very hard to move experiments from one site to another, and to replicate experiments. With the increasing availability of shared platforms such as commercial cloud computing platforms or publicly funded super-computing centers, there is a need and an opportunity to abstract the experimental environment from the hardware, and distribute complete setups as a virtual machine, a container, or some other shareable resource, that can be deployed and worked with anywhere. In this paper, we discuss our experience with this concept and present some tools that the community might find useful. We outline, as a case study, how such tools can be applied to a naturalistic language acquisition audio corpus.

The speech recognition virtual kitchen turns one
This paper describes recent developments in the Speech Recognition Virtual Kitchen. The core of the research infrastructure is the use of Virtual Machines or Linux containers. We liken these to a “kitchen”, because they provide “appliances” (e.g., speech recognition tool-kits), “recipes” (scripts for creating state-ofthe art systems), and “ingredients” (language data). Users can now download a ...
متن کاملVirtual Class Room Experimentation for Teaching Manufacturing and Operation Management Course
There has been a recent development and explosion of interest among academicians across a wide range of disciplines in the use of virtual Class room. Utilization of the virtual class room as a laboratory experimentation for teaching and learning has increased significantly in recent years as development tools for web based applications have become easier to use and computers have become more ca...
متن کاملVirtual Space as a Platform for Student Research Practices
Online learning is becoming an increasingly popular request. Many universities are moving fully or partially to this form of study. In the article, the authors considered what is virtual space, what are its criteria, as well as applicability for teaching students and passing research practices. Based on an analysis of existing virtual spaces (platforms), an experiment was conducted. The study s...
متن کاملSimulating Delay Tolerant Networking for CubeSats
Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) is a communication protocol suite that addresses many of the communication challenges CubeSats encounter with space exploration including low transmission power, intermittent connectivity, long delay, and high bit error rate. Most research for DTN space communication relies on simulation for protocol validation and integration since real deployments are often eit...
متن کاملA Performance Study of Containers in Cloud Environment
Container technology has gained great popularity since containers could provide near-native performance in cloud environment. According to different design purposes and underlying implementations, containers could be classified into application containers (e.g., Docker) and system containers (e.g., LXC). The diversity of containers may lead to a confusing choice about which kind of container is...
